Throwback Challenge: ACOMAF

I can officially say that A Court of Mist and Fury is still my all time favorite book!

Sarah J Maas packs all of the best parts of books into one! It has an amazing plot line, unbelievable character development, knock your socks off romance, and stunning world building. Some books that are the size of this one have too many events in them typically in my opinion,  but even plot point in this book is perfectly planned out and every event deserves and is required throughout this book. Most authors have all of the character development with the main characters finished by the end of the first book, it is amazing how Sarah J Maas develops character even further in the second book.

I think that this series is one of the best fantasy novels for sale. Sarah J Maas is just such an amazing author and cannot compare to any other books I have read, and I have read a lot. I would say the closest is Cassandra Clare, who is also a stunning writer. If you haven’t read the ACOTAR series, drop what you are doing and go buy this STUNNING series!!

If you have read them, what is your opinion on the series?

What book should I read next? (Hunger Games, Warcross, P.S. I Like You, When It’s Real, Eliza and Her Monsters)

Best New Fantasy: A Curse So Dark and Lonely

Author: Brigid Kemmerer

Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult

Goodreads Summary:

In a lush, contemporary fantasy retelling of Beauty and the Beast, Brigid Kemmerer gives readers another compulsively readable romance perfect for fans of Marissa Meyer.

Fall in love, break the curse.

It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.

Nothing has ever been easy for Harper Lacy. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she’s instead somehow sucked into Rhen’s cursed world.

Break the curse, save the kingdom.

A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn’t know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what’s at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.

Spoiler free Summary:

Oh. My. Gosh.

This was such an amazing book! It is a retelling of beauty and the beast and the author did an amazing job. It reminded me of A Court of Thorns and Roses, I would say if A Court of Thorns and Roses and A Court of Mist and Fury were one book, this is it!

Harper gets thrown into this amazing alternate universe and is thrust into the throws of this dying kingdom called Emberfall. Harper is such an amazing and dynamic character. She is the badass female that I love seeing in these types of YA novels. She wont take no for an answer and does whatever she wants. One thing I love that the author did is that she gave the main character a disability, but in no way does she let that effect her life. She has cerebral palsy, which in the case of this character gives her a noticeable limp. It is something that, in my reading experience, has not been done in a YA fantasy novel.

The world building also blew my mind. Brigid Kemmerer is spectacular at describing this universe so well that you can picture everything in your head. I need to see a map of this fantasy land immediately because of how much I have fallen in love with it.

This book is one of those books that has you turning each page until you have read the last word. Then once you finish, you just want more. It kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way, and the ending blew my mind!

If you have not ordered this book, you need to go do so immediately!

Spoiler free Summary:

Reign the Earth was one of my top reads last year and holds a special place in my heart. Considering this I was very weary when I read the description of this book and the main character was not Shalia. She was such an amazing and influential character that I didn’t think she could be topped or even that another character could come close. A.C. Gaughen has blown me away once again, not only with her powerful characters, but also amazing plot.

A.C. Gaughen has expanded even more on this fascinating world that she has created and made me fall in love with. Aspasia was the character that I didn’t know was needed and was the perfect fit for the sequel. She is what I call a dynamic character. She comes from such a harsh background and just keeps adapting, to keep not only herself going, but helping those around her that she loves.

In the past I am usually the type of person that always wants the same characters in every book. I typically don’t like when authors try to have a million new characters in every book and have it all connect somehow in the end. A.C. Gaughen is wonderful and she pulled it off and I loved every second of it!

This book has everything you need in life. You have badass characters, pirates, fighting, and even a little romance. It makes the perfect mixture for an outstanding fantasy. She has amazed me once again and I can wait to see what she has in store for the next book in the series. If you haven’t read Reign the Earth please go read it right now! Also don’t forget to pick your copy of Imprison the Sky tomorrow!

Reign the Earth

Reign the Earth

Author: A.C. Gaughen

Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult

Goodreads Summary:

Shalia is a proud daughter of the desert, but after years of devastating war with the adjoining kingdom, her people are desperate for peace. Willing to trade her freedom to ensure the safety of her family, Shalia becomes Queen of the Bonelands.

But she soon learns that her husband, Calix, is motivated only by his desire to exterminate the Elementae—mystical people who can control earth, wind, air, and fire. Even more unsettling are Shalia’s feelings for her husband’s brother, which unleash a power over the earth she never knew she possessed—a power that could get her killed. As rumors of a rebellion against Calix spread, Shalia must choose between the last chance for peace and her own future as an Elementae.

This intense, richly drawn high-fantasy by the author of Scarlet will hold readers spellbound.

Spoiler free Summary:

The first thing that comes to mind for me is: Avatar: The Last Airbender. I was obsessed with this show as a kid and this book brought back all of the awesome memories because if the elemental powers.

A.C. Gaughen has created an amazing world for you to fall in love with. I love how creative her imagination was when it came to devising these wonderful parts of the world that the characters live in. This novel was such an out of the box idea that translated into something unlike anything I have ever read before. This book reminded me if The Wrath & The Dawn and Avatar: The Last Airbender had a book baby together.

This author keeps you on your toes the whole time you are reading. I loved that she had multiple plot twists that totally blind sided me. You will not want to put this down until you have read the very last sentence.

The character development was outstanding. I felt like I could really get into the story since she made these characters so personable. Shalia had such a fascinating growth throughout this whole novel.

Reign the Earth will be one of those books that I will think about forever and definitely re-read in the future. I cannot wait to meet AC Gaugen at BookCon! I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in fantasy, faeries, action, or a novel that you will not be willing to put down.

Side-note: I don’t typically read the acknowledgments at the end of a book, but for some reason did this time. If you read this book you need to read it also, this authors story is amazing, She persevered through so many hardships to get this wonderful book out to us, her readers.

The Cruel Prince

The Cruel Prince

Author: Holly Black

Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult

Goodreads Summary:

Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

Spoiler free Summary:

This book will definitely be in my top books of the year! A mind blowing fantasy novel that is easy to dive into. You will not see the plot twists coming and it will leave you speechless!

Holly Black has created a fantasy masterpiece that you never want to put down. I love how she did something that most fantasy authors won’t dare touch, which is incorporating humans into their story. I mean we all have seen halflings, but it is truly rare to see full humans in the faerie world. She puts a wonderfully delicious twist on how fantasy worlds can be constructed.

Something I hate is when authors have a boring beginning. Luckily this author dives right in! Right off the bat it has action that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I honestly had the hardest time putting the book down because you just want to know how she is going to keep this story going and where she is going to take it.

The character development was like nothing I have ever witnessed before. I would definitely say she is up there with the Queen Sarah J Maas on this one. She will make you like a character, then BAM you think the opposite. Jude was a wonderful main character and reminded me a bit of Aelin from Throne of Glass.

The Cruel Prince was mind blowing and I would suggest everyone read it! I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in fantasy, faeries, action, or a novel that you will not be willing to put down.
