Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda

Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda

Author: Becky Albertalli

Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult

Goodreads Summary:

Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.

With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.

Spoiler free Summary:

I will honestly come out an say this, I read this book after seeing the trailer for the movie. I did not want to feel guilty for seeing the movie, so I decided that it was finally time to read the book. It was such a different pace compared to the books that I usually read and I actually genuinely enjoyed it!

Becky Albertalli really trances you into being emerged into the world that she has created. I feel that the idea of anonymously emailing someone is a subject that is so present into todays society. I mean people are constantly talking to people from different places with todays social media and anyone could get into a situation like Simon with someone close or far away.

The character development was so unique to me because I have never read a book that deals with something such as coming out. It really hits close to home because one of my best friends came out to a couple years ago. It is so surreal to see how he was probably experiencing high school around all of us friends who were in a totally different world. Simon was a stupendous main character and reminded me SOOOOOO much of friend, honestly it was crazy. There were literally so many parts of the book where I was like oh my gosh this was my friend in high school.

Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda was such an eye opening read! I would highly recommend everyone to read this book!

Book Expo America and BookCon 2018

Book Expo America and BookCon

As many of you know I am pretty recent in the blog and youtube community. I have been following book people since high school, but did not start actively posting until about August or September 2017. Since I have been following everyone since I was about 16 I have constantly heard of Book Expo and BookCon and have always been super jealous of everyone going. Every year I have told myself “one year I will go to this.” I am happy to say the day has come!

In February I bought my older sister and I tickets to BookCon. Then I decided to apply as a blogger to Book Expo, but I was fully aware that I have very little followers and views. I totally expected to get rejected, I was mainly applying to know the process and know what I should try to fix on my bogs to get accepted the next year. I had up to 21 business days to get a reply on my status. Once I hit the 21st day I was a bit down that I hadn’t heard ANYTHING, not even a rejection.

Then it happened.

I was on my home from dropping someone off at the bar at night and saw an email ding on my phone. I just figured it was for my work, then I saw it said Book Expo. I did a mini freakout and was so nervous to look. Then I decided to finally brave it and went into the email. Then I saw the best words ever “Your request for a badge has been approved.” I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, against everything I thought I was actually approved!

So, I am so happy to say I will be on my way to New York for the best 5 days of my life at the end of May!

Is anyone else going? Please let me know because I will be at Book Expo by myself and need people to brave the crowds with me!

p.s. If you have been and have been and have any advice please comment it 🙂
